7. The DMZ

For something totally unique, take a DMZ tour – the border zone between North and South Korea. It’s a wild mix of history, tension, and curiosity where you’ll learn about the Korean War and even catch a glimpse into North Korea itself.

What to do:

Step onto North Korean soil through the Joint Security Area – a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Afterwards, take in sweeping views across the border from Dora Observatory, and explore Imjingak Park, home to the Freedom Bridge and poignant memorials. For a deeper dive into history, follow the trail through the Third Infiltration Tunnel, originally dug by North Korean soldiers, and uncover the full story at the DMZ Museum.

What to eat:

You can only enter the DMZ with a tour, so double-check if food is included as there are no restaurants inside! For a cool souvenir, pick up local goodies from Taesung Village like rice, wine, chocolate, or even kimchi, all grown and produced right near the border.
